How to care for your newly refinished hardwood floor

All articles

A freshly refinished floor looks incredible — and a little care in the first weeks keeps it that way for years. Here’s the routine we give every client.

A glossy, freshly refinished oak floor

The first 7 days

  • Walk on the floor as little as possible, and in socks rather than shoes.
  • Lift furniture into place — never slide, drag or roll it across the new finish.
  • Keep pets’ nails trimmed, and keep dogs off the fresh finish while it cures.

The first month

The varnish needs time to fully cure. Don’t lay down carpets or area rugs for about a month — if you do it too soon, the rug can stick to the finish.

Everyday care

  • Use felt protective pads under furniture and chair legs to prevent scratches.
  • Clean with a damp cloth and wipe dry immediately. Never let water sit on the floor.
  • Never wax your floor — avoid Murphy Oil, Hertel, wax and similar products.
  • For Finitec finishes, dedicated cleaning products are available at Peinture Micca.

When it’s time for a refresh

Even well-loved floors lose their luster eventually. If yours is looking tired but the wood is still sound, our 3-step refection can bring back the shine without a full sanding.
